As you get older, your skin changes. It loses weight, thins out, and no longer appears to be as smooth and plump as it once was. Your veins and bones are easily visible. It can take longer for scratches, cuts, or bumps to heal. Years of sun tanning or prolonged exposure to the sun may cause age spots, dryness, and wrinkles.

Your internal body processes, such as workout recovery and skin cell turnover, take longer to complete or recharge and slow down as you get older. This allows symptoms of aging to appear, such as wrinkles and exhaustion. Sometimes these changes can come as a shock if they occur sooner than expected. For this, the term “premature” aging is used.

Although it’s impossible to stop these changes entirely, however, you should remain calm as there are ways you can minimize the signs of aging in your body, mainly if they’re occurring before you’re ready to accept them.

Symptoms of Skin Aging:

The first signs of aging would start appearing on your skin’s surface about the age of 25. Fine lines emerge first, followed by wrinkles, loss of volume, and elasticity loss as time passes.

Due to the process of aging, there are phenotypic changes in cutaneous cells, as well as functional and structural changes in extracellular matrix components, including elastin and collagens.

The appearance of wrinkles

Wrinkles and fine lines are the first visible symptoms of skin aging. Laughter lines, also known as crow’s feet, are tiny, shallow wrinkles that appear at the eyes’ outer corners. They become more pronounced when we get older and eventually develop into permanent wrinkles that are apparent even though our faces aren’t moving. Volume loss

The loss of volume follows the appearance of wrinkles. However, facial contours and loss of volume can be challenging to detect. When your lips begin to bleed, you should know that it suggests your skin is losing volume as lip bleeding is the first sign of it. The appearance of a turkey neck, sagging skin, and a flattening of the cheeks are all signs of a loss of facial volume. The losing volume would alter your face’s overall appearance, making it appear exhausted, sad, and negative. The nasolabial fold, which forms between the nose and the mouth, is also related to volume loss and sagging skin.

The appearance of deep wrinkles followed by loss of elasticity

Our skin matures as we age. As time passes, it becomes weak, it losses its firmness and elasticity. Skin loses the youthful radiance and appears to be more crepey and dry. As I have already mentioned above, that the process of skin aging varies from person to person; however, the loss of elasticity is more commonly experienced by people above 50.

Ways to prevent skin aging

Your genes can influence skin aging. Intrinsic aging is the term for this. If anyone in your family has wrinkle-prone skin, that doesn’t mean you cannot save yourself from it; you still have a lot of power over your own skin and its aging.

Protect yourself from the sun

It’s fine if you go out during the day; however, you have to be a bit cautious. Try to avoid being in the sun while the sun’s rays are at their highest. In the summer, for example, try avoiding sunlight from 10 am to 4 pm. Moreover, don’t be fooled by the clouds. The sun’s rays are capable of moving through clouds. Even if you’re in the water, you can still get sunburned, so be careful when you’re in a lake, pool, or go outside for cliff diving.

Use sunscreen

Find a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 (sun protection factor). Choose sunscreens that say “broad spectrum” on the bottle. It’s better to apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes prior to going outside. Sunscreen should be reapplied every 2 hours at the very least. Whether you’re rubbing your skin with a towel, sweating, or bathing, you should apply sunscreen more often.

Quit smoking

Smoking quickens the aging process of the skin. It speeds up the aging process by reducing elasticity and dulling the skin. Quitting smoking will help to enhance the appearance of your skin.

Avoid repetitive facial expressions

Stop making a repetitive facial expression as the muscles under your skin contract when you make a facial expression. These lines become permanent if you contract the same muscles continuously for an extended period of time. Squinting lines can be reduced by wearing sunglasses.

Maintain healthy diet

Consume a nutritious, well-balanced diet. According to the results of a few studies, eating a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables will help prevent damage that causes premature skin aging. According to a study, a diet high in sugar or other processed carbohydrates will hasten the aging process. You might have heard the phrase, “you are what you eat” it’s time to follow it.

Avoid alcohol consumption

Your skin can get irritated by alcohol as it is rough on the skin. It dehydrates the skin and hurts it over time. This can make you appear older.

Start doing workout

According to a few studies, moderate exercise will strengthen your immune system and improve blood circulation. As a result, your skin can tend to appear more youthful.

Stay hydrated

Water consumption is essential for good health. Water is needed for almost all of your body’s functions. Water can help keep your skin hydrated and healthy from the inside, in addition to essential functions including controlling your body temperature, assisting with digestion, and flushing chemicals from your body.

If your body is healthy and working correctly, then it would automatically keep your skin healthy.
